CHAPTER 10

Max was in the workroom when she heard the doorbell jingle. She came into the showroom and found Detective Cruz there.

"Are you busy?" he asked.

They sat down in the showroom and Max wondered what other questions he had for her. She'd already told him everything she knew. The detective seemed nervous or uncomfortable. She couldn't figure out which. Or why.

"I know you think Andy is not guilty," he began.

"I know he's not guilty," she interrupted.

"Let me finish, please." He took a deep breath and continued. " There was so much pressure to make an arrest, from the public and from the mayor. And all the evidence points to Andy. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but it was the Police Chief’s decision to arrest Andy. I wanted to wait for the report on the cake samples. But, in spite of that, I’m sure we have our murderer."

“Did you even investigate anyone else?" she asked.

"Honestly, I feel like I’ve investigated everyone. Officially, the investigation is closed.”

“Officially?” she asked.

“Let’s just say I’m keeping my eyes and ears open.”

“So you’re not completely convinced that Andy’s guilty.”

“I’m not saying that. We have the right guy.” It was like Detective Cruz was trying to tell her something without actually telling her.

“Then why are you here?”

“ I wanted to tell you how sorry I am. I imagine you hate me right now for arresting your friend. I know this is hard for you.”

“I don’t hate you.” At least she didn’t think she did. “I am pretty angry. What evidence do you have that makes you think that Andy killed Jennifer?”

“Trust me. We have evidence.”

“You don’t know him. He’s a really good guy.” Max told him stories about Andy growing up, about how he volunteered at the local animal shelter, and how he put off college to help run the bakery when his dad had wrist surgery. While other kids were off partying, he went to bed early so he could get up at 4:30 and help his mom bake bread and pastries. She left out the part about her falling in love with him. She didn't realize how long they'd been talking until Keiko returned. Keiko stopped when she entered the shop and didn't say anything, but just stood there for a moment, then passed by them and went in the office.

"I'd better run," Detective Cruz said, rising from his chair. "Can we keep this conversation between the two of us?”

“As long as you promise to keep an open mind.”

Cruz nodded. “Take care, Max."

She watched him leave. Maybe there was hope for him yet.

After he left, Keiko came out of the office. "What did he want?"

"I’m not sure. I think he just wanted to apologize for arresting Andy." And hint to her that he wasn’t convinced that Andy was guilty? Her stomach grumbled. She told Keiko she was going to run out to get a bite.

"I brought you some lentil soup from the Cheshire Cat," Keiko said, handing her a bag. "I thought you might not get a chance to get away.
